LESSON 8. – LES ADJECTIFS QUALICATIFS DESCRIPTIFS – DESCRIPTIVE/ QUALITATIVE ADJECTIVES.

Welcome to today’s lesson. Last week we learnt possessive adjectives, please you can follow the link [lesson seven]to read the lesson if you missed the last class. This week we will have a look on another type of adjective in French (descriptive adjectives).

The descriptive adjectives as the name implies, are words used to describe/ modify nouns or subject pronouns in a sentence.  Please note that adjectives in French are used according to the gender and number of the noun they modify. In other words, there are masculine and feminine adjectives as well as plural adjectives.

List of descriptive adjectives by categories.

Below are some of the adjectives that describe the appearance, the personality and the sentiments.

There are so many of them which we will meet later in the course of the subsequent classes. Meanwhile, I would love you to master the ones above and let them stick in the head. Now, the next step is to try them out in sentences. Let’s look at the examples below;

  • Ma mère est grosse – my mother is fat.
  • Elle est grosse – she is fat.

In the above examples, the adjective ‘grosse’ has been used to describe the noun ‘ma mère’ and the subject pronoun ‘elle’.

  • Mes frères et moi sommes – my brothers and I are tall.
  • Nous sommes grands. – we are tall.

The examples here, show that the adjective ‘grands’ is in plural form and has been used to describe to describe the nouns and subject pronouns ‘mes frères et moi’ and ‘nous’ respectively.

  • Peter est nerveux – Peter is nervous.
  • Il est nerveux. – he is nervous.
